Domestic tourism rebounds – Tourism looking better for Thailand

Domestic tourism in Thailand has demonstrated a remarkable resurgence, rebounding by 93% in comparison to the pre-pandemic year of 2019, according to the latest findings from the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). Suladda Sarutilavan, the director of TAT’s Chiang Mai office, highlighted that the TAT anticipates domestic tourists to embark on approximately 160 million journeys within this year. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Ms Suladda underscored the steady improvements observed in the overall tourism landscape of both Thailand and Chiang Mai throughout the current year.

The resurgence of the domestic tourism sector can be attributed to pivotal factors including the World Health Organization’s declaration marking the conclusion of the global health emergency triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic. Additionally, governmental initiatives such as the introduction of supplementary public holidays and strategic campaigns offering discounts and curated events for tourists have contributed to the upward trajectory, as stated by Ms Suladda.

This resurgence of domestic tourism has also positively impacted various regions, including the luxury hotel Phi Phi Island, particularly notable in popular destinations like the SAii Phi Phi Island Village, further enhancing Thailand’s appeal to both local and international travellers.
