Sri Lanka is a multi-cultural country that’s blessed with many amazing cultures, and each culture has unique rituals and festivals. If you travel to Sri Lanka in July/August, you get the privilege of witnessing the Esala Maha Perahera which is also known as Dalada Perahera in Kandy. In addition to this main procession, there are also some other Buddhist celebrations, and one of those is the Duruthu Perehara that takes place in January every year.
In 2022, the Duruthu Perahera will start from Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya and perform its golden rituals adhering to safety and health guidelines. The Uda Maluwe Perahera and Rondoli Perahera will also happen on two separate days. This elegant Perahera commemorates the first visit to Sri Lanka by Lord Buddha over 2500 years ago.
