The Maldives recently updated its entry restrictions, most notably reopening its borders to South Asian tourists once more. While the country restarted tourism in 2020, it put a halt to issuing visas to South Asian travellers in May this year due to the worsening pandemic situation in the region. However, after reviewing the situation, those from South Asian countries were permitted entry from 15th July 2021 onwards for stays at a Maldives luxury resort located on a private island; options included properties like Atmosphere Kanifushi which follow stringent health and hygiene protocols.
This easing of restrictions was good news not only for South Asian travellers but the Maldives as well as it looks to further boost the tourism industry. From January to June this year, the county had registered more than 550,000 tourists and will hope the numbers will continue to rise now that those from the region can again enjoy holidays here.
