Government Mulls Nuwara Eliya’s Cable Car Project – A Key Tourism Development

The Sri Lankan government is further studying the proposed cable car project in Nuwara Eliya; this was highlighted by Daily FT on its website on 1st May 2021. Known as ‘Little England’, this town in the Central Province has also been named amongst the country’s tourist zones and such an attraction will no doubt increase the appeal of visiting Nuwara Eliya. Hotels in this destination such as Araliya Red additionally provide an ideal base for travellers to experience the many local attractions.

The cable car project is expected to cost approximately € 52 million and will be the first of its kind in Sri Lanka if it goes ahead as planned. Apart from its financial viability, the government is also looking into the operational and environmental feasibility as well. According to the initial proposal, the cable car system which is part of a joint venture between the island nation and Austria will link Nanu Oya and Nuwara Eliya.
