Preserving history while welcoming travellers – Nuwara Eliya’s charm gets a fresh boost
Sri Lanka’s cabinet has approved a proposal to develop the colonial-era Nuwara Eliya Post Office for tourism, while keeping postal operations fully functional, according to Minister Nalinda Jayatissa. The move aims to modernise the building and surrounding premises to attract both local and international visitors and create new revenue opportunities.
The post office, a popular stop for hundreds of tourists daily, features a colonial-era wooden mail box where visitors often send postcards home. Previous plans to lease the building to India’s Taj Hotels had faced opposition from postal employees and activists.
Located in the scenic hill town, the post office sits among some of the best places to visit in Nuwara Eliya. Part of the premises has already been converted into a holiday bungalow for postal officers, while nearby accommodations such as Araliya Green Hills offer convenient stays for visitors exploring the area.
