Holiday Season Boosts Maldives Tourism

2020 ended with Maldives tourism enjoying increased arrivals which coincided with the holiday season. This bodes well for the country which is slowly but surely recovering after the COVID-19 pandemic severely disrupted the tourism industry due to border closures and travel restrictions. Following July’s opening of international borders in the Maldives, luxury resortoptions on private islands including the likes of Atmosphere Kanifushi have been welcoming visitors keen to enjoy holidays once more.

This surge in numbers was attributed to several factors including effective destination marketing and media campaigns as well as the country being named as the “World’s Leading Destination” in the prestigious World Travel Awards. Russia, India and the UK were amongst the key source markets in terms of visitors, while in December 2020, the country reached the notable feat of recording 100,000 arrivals since it reopened.
