Songkran Festival

Holiday season brings in tourist arrivals – Thailand has a prosperous Songkran

Authorities in Phuket were expecting a significant increase in visitors during the Songkran Festival, surpassing the numbers seen in 2019 before the pandemic. It was anticipated that the number of visitors would be 30% higher than pre-pandemic levels, resulting in a boost to local tourism revenue. Lertchai Wangtrakuldee, Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Phuket Office, stated that over 100,000 hotel rooms in Phuket were been booked for the Songkran week, accounting for approximately 85% of room vacancies. SAii Laguna Phuket, a well-known 5 star beach resort in Phuket saw an increase in revenue as well.

The expected revenue generated during this period is estimated to be around 4.5 billion baht. As international tourists from the US and Europe are returning home, domestic tourists are driving the surge in Phuket’s tourism, attracted by the government’s “We Travel Together” campaign. This campaign, which began in March and continues until the end of April, has incentivized domestic travel and contributed to the increased tourism activity in Phuket.
