International Borders Reopened in Sri Lanka – Tourism Industry Back on Track

The tourism industry in Sri Lanka received a long-awaited boost this year as the country reopened its borders for international travellers. This took place on 21st January 2021 as the island’s international airports in Mattala and Katunayake both opened on the same day. While tourists are welcome once more, stringent health and safety measures are in place; as part of these protocols, travellers need to present a negative result of a COVID-19 PCR test taken at an accredited laboratory within 96 hours of their arrival.

Additionally, a bio-security bubble has been created whereby travellers can stay at government-approved ‘Safe and Secure’ Level 1 hotels. In Tangalle, such accommodation options include the property of Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas. While there is no minimum stay period for tourists, they must spend the initial 14 days after arrival at such hotels. Also, travellers can visit specific attractions in the country as well, following the necessary guidelines.
