ITB Berlins Highlights Sri Lanka’s Bio Bubble Concept – Country Continues to Draw Tourists

Sri Lanka’s initiative of having a ‘bio bubble’ to facilitate safe stays for tourists was recently highlighted on ITB Berlin’s web portal and e-Magazine. Amongst the points mentioned was that while many nations were having difficulties kick-starting tourism, this novel concept was enabling travellers to experience the island nation once more. Held online this year from 9th to 12th March, the ITB Berlin trade show featured more than 3,500 exhibitors including Sri Lanka who participated via a virtual platform.

Since Sri Lanka reopened its borders in January this year, tourists have been arriving, encouraged to travel by the bio bubble concept; it enables them to stay and move freely at a designated hotel without the need for rigid quarantine. As highlighted in the Daily News on 17th May 2021, tourists were also still permitted to travel to different provinces under this biosafety bubble. Additionally, the country has safe accommodation options in place including at hotels near Colombo with properties such as Pegasus Reef adopting stringent health and safety measures.
