Japan Fast-Tracks Digital Entry: ETA System Coming by 2028

Get ready for smarter travel—Japan’s new digital gate is almost here.

Japan is accelerating the launch of its electronic travel authoriSation system, now expected by fiscal year 2028 instead of 2030. Provisionally named JESTA, the system will apply to travellers from visa-exempt countries visiting for tourism or business. It aims to modernise border control by requiring travellers to submit personal and trip details online before boarding, streamlining airport procedures, and enhancing security.

Justice Minister Keisuke Suzuki confirmed the update, citing a surge in international travel and the need for efficient visitor management. Backed by Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, this move aligns with Japan’s ambitious target of 60 million annual tourists by 2030.

Travellers planning short-term stays from 71 countries—including Australia, Singapore, the UK, and the US—will need ETA approval before entry.
