Sri Lanka’s Sacred Tooth Relic Temple, the Sri Dalada Maligawa, has officially announced the schedule for the 2026 Kandy Esala Perahera. The Kumbal Perahera will run from August 18 to 22, followed by the Randoli Perahera from August 23 to 26. The festival will conclude with the traditional water-cutting ceremony (Diya Kepeema) in the early hours of August 27, followed by a Day Perahera parading through the streets later in the day.
Considered Sri Lanka’s grandest Buddhist festival, the Esala Perahera honours the Sacred Tooth Relic with elaborate nightly processions, drawing thousands of visitors annually to top Kandy tourist places. The period also marks a significant increase in occupancy rates at hotels across town, including locations such as Kandy Myst by Cinnamon.
The 2026 schedule and traditional rituals were unveiled at a media briefing held at the Sri Dalada Maligawa auditorium, presided over by the Most Venerable Narampanawa Ananda Thera, Anunayake Thera of the Asgiri Maha Vihara Chapter, and senior government officials.
