Kandy Esala Perahera 2022 – A display of religious culture

Displaying the brilliant culture of Sri Lanka is the religious festival both locals and foreigners line up to witness. The Kandy Esala Perahera is a parade of bright colours and elephants clad in majestic clothing. The parade begins at the Temple of the Tooth Relic with the main elephant dressed in rhinestone-studded robes carrying the revered tooth relic out of the temple premises.

The main elephant is followed out by groups of dancers dressed in vibrant costumes and heavy make-up. There are also men dancing with torches of fire and performing various stunts. This is all in reverence to the sacred tooth relic. For those travelling to Kandy to see this spectacle just for the evening, Malkey Rent A Car offers travellers services for a Sri Lanka Car Rental. As the Esala Perahera takes place in August, it would be best to book your hotel well in advance if you decide to stay a while in Kandy.
