Kataragama Perahera in Sri Lanka –A Vibrant Pilgrimage of All-faiths

Adorning the streets with a vibrant palette of colours and wonderment, the Kataragama Perahera is held in the months of July and August. The devoted pilgrims travel on foot (known as “pada yatra”) in harsh weathers and unfavourable conditions from different regions in the country to attend to the procession as a preamble to the festival.

Drawing enthusiastic spectators from all over the world, the Kataragama Perahera is a true display of culture bringing those of different faiths together. Travellers can witness this amazing spectacle whilst visiting Sri Lanka. Tours can be arranged with the help of travel planners such as Sri Lanka Tailor-made. This ceremonial pageant travels from “Maha Devalaya” to the “Valli Ama Devalaya” concluding it with the “water cutting ceremony” on the last day.
