The government of Sri Lanka has updated regulations on filming in Sri Lanka recently. The Ministry of External Affairs facilitates and coordinates visits to Sri Lanka by all foreign media personnel according to requirements and guidelines set up are to have clear transparent policies in the filming industry to make it fully productive. The updates to guidelines can be seen below.
It is important that all media personnel planning to visit Sri Lanka must obtain a valid visa prior to arrival in Colombo. It is not recommended to use one’s media accreditation under any circumstance for those entering the country with tourist visas issued at the port of their entry. Foreign media personnel must obtain media accreditation from the Department of Government Information, issued upon recommendation by Ministry of External Affairs. All visiting media personnel are requested to contact Public Communications Division of the Ministry of External Affairs in Colombo to obtain the recommendation letter upon arrival in the country. They should also hold a temporary import document “Carnet”, for any equipment carried by them into the country and need to undergo clearance of such by customs. Filming in wildlife locations require prior approval as well. Besides these important guidelines for filming in the island, there have been few other updates introduced for conformity by all affected parties alike.
