As does the whole world, Luang Prabang too celebrates International Women’s Day (IWD). This day was originally named as International Working Women’s Day. The 8th of March is considered a very important day in Luang Prabang. IWD focuses on displaying respect, appreciation, love and care for women.
The holiday began as a political and social event throughout the world but later began to blend into the various cultures in each country. The same goes for Luang Prabang. In Laos, women celebrate by downing a can or 2 of beer while men see to the housework. For this period, holiday tours such as a Luang Prabang cruise for instance with Mekong Kingdoms will have special packages available for IWD. Women often treat themselves to either a day or night out with friends, putting their work on hold for this 1 day.
