Last year, Malaysia initiated a special programme offering digital nomad visas for foreign travellers as the country looked to become the leading destination in the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) region for digital nomads. This was once more put in the spotlight in May this year on an updated online article on the Travel Off Path website which compared this visa scheme with some of the others on offer in nations like Thailand. This Malaysian initiative, known as the DE Rantau programme, was seen as one of the easiest in Asia to qualify for digital nomads looking for a destination to work remotely over an extended period.

Apart from offering prospective foreign applicants a chance to stay and work for three to 12 months in Malaysia (with an added one-year renewal), it also provides support for digital nomad communities and networking. A key benefit is that individual earnings from international clients or companies will come under standard Malaysian tax rates. The country continues to be an ideal place for digital nomads even for shorter stays in destinations like the capital, Kuala Lumpur with diverse KL hotel promotion options on offer; additionally, those based at properties like Travelodge Chinatown Kuala Lumpur can make use of features like high-speed Wi-Fi access, a central location and 24/7 support to work, live, explore and experience the city.
