2023 was a stellar year for tourism in the Maldives which celebrated a historic milestone by welcoming more than 1.8 million visitors. By recording 1.88 million visitors, the country achieved its highest number of tourists for a given year while also seeing a 12% increase in arrivals when compared with 2022. The impressive 1.8 million mark was reached on 20th December 2023 accompanied by a colourful ceremony by the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation.
As per the data released by the Maldives Tourism Ministry, India was the top source market for tourism in 2023; hot on its heels in second place was Russia, followed by China as more and more international travellers enjoyed holidays in the Maldives. Villas on private island resorts continued to be a popular accommodation choice for these getaways with properties like Kuramathi Maldives drawing visitors from around the world. Following the record-breaking 2023, the signs are even more positive this year for tourism, as the country has set its arrivals target for 2024 at 2 million.
