Maldives and India
The Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO), signifying a renewal of ties after a political fallout earlier this year.
The move was made with the intention to enhance tourism arrivals to the island from India. The fallout between the two nations led to a reduction in visitor arrivals from India which until then was one of the larger source markets for the Maldives. According to the MOU, some of the key objectives include promoting bilateral tourism between the countries through joint marketing, the sharing of best practices to improve service standards and operations, and promoting sustainable tourism practices.
The Maldives is already a well-known tropical island destination owing to its inviting climate, natural beauty and landscapes, and rich biodiversity. Over the years the island has also improved its hospitality services – there are now several island resorts and luxury accommodations like the Grand Park Kodhipparu Maldives which is an all-inclusive overwater bungalow in Maldives. The recent partnership with India was made amidst continuing efforts to meet the target arrival number of 2.1 million for 2024.
