The Maldivian government has just announced an ambitious expansion plan for Velana International Airport, aimed to boost the country’s tourism and climate resilience. The billion-dollar project will include a new runway and infrastructure to “climate-proof” the structures against weather-related disasters.
The expansion will increase the airport’s capacity with a new seaplane terminal to accommodate more flights, and more tourists seeking to visit the famed coral beaches and overwater villas of Maldives. The new runway will be designed to withstand extreme weather conditions so the airport can continue to operate even in the face of climate change.
This is part of the Maldives’ ongoing efforts to develop its tourism and attract more visitors. The new airport, located a short distance from Anantara Veli Maldives Resort, will not only improve connectivity but also create new jobs and diversify the local economy.
