The Maldives welcomed Almudena Esparza as the 1 millionth tourist in 2026, who arrived via Qatar Airways with her husband for their first trip to the island in early June this year. She was honoured at Velana International Airport by Tourism Minister Mohamed Ameen, who called the achievement notable given disruptions from the Middle East war.
Despite reaching this important milestone, arrivals are still about 5% behind the 2025 pace, and June alone is down 17% compared to last year. The rising fuel prices have led to higher ticket costs, adding more pressure to the recovery efforts. Despite the challenges, the government and the travel industry are collaborating to bring in additional airlines. Minister Ameen is optimistic that by the third quarter, the country will be on track to reach its ambitious goal of welcoming 2.5 million tourists this year.
Still, there is an influx of tourists seeking the comfort of a Maldives luxury resort. Places like the stunning Coco Bodu Hithi continue to attract international travellers, keeping the islands at the top of global travel lists despite global economic and political challenges.
