In a bold move to diversify its economy, the Maldives is set to launch its first International Financial Centre (IFC) in 2025. Traditionally reliant on tourism, the island nation aims to transform into a regional financial hub, attracting global investors and financial institutions.
The project, backed by government and private sector partnerships, will be located in Hulhumalé, a rapidly developing urban island. Already home to the Velana International Airport, the island is just minutes from several resorts like OBLU Select Lobigili. This allows visitors to transition smoothly between business and leisure, at an iconic Maldives water villa with a private pool.
Officials say the IFC will offer tax incentives, regulatory ease, and advanced infrastructure to support fintech, asset management, and offshore banking.
“This marks a new era of economic growth,” said Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer. Analysts note the IFC could boost job creation and foreign investment, adding to the revenue generated from seasonal tourism. Construction is already underway, with a phased rollout planned over the next three years.
