Maldives signs Paris Climate Change Agreement – Takes a step closer to becoming carbon neutral by 2020

In a move to pursue its anti-pollution policies aggressively, the Maldives recently became part of the record 171 nations to sign the historic Paris climate change agreement. The country’s environment minister, Thoriq Ibrahim signed the groundbreaking deal on behalf of the country at a ceremony held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Under the Paris Agreement, dubbed ‘a new covenant for the future’ by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, all countries will set their own targets for reducing carbon dioxide emissions. In Maldives, resort hotel companies too need to play their part to support the country’s pledge to reduce greenhouse emissions by 10% before 2030. Leading resorts such asAnantara Veli Maldives Resort have already begun switching to renewable sources of energy, setting the trend for the country and the world to rally around to keep global temperature increases to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
