Maldives to Celebrate Victory Day Next Month – Remembering A Significant Triumph

As November 3rd approaches, the picturesque nation of Maldives is gearing up for its annual Victory Day celebrations. This holiday commemorates the day in 1988 when with the significant assistance of Indian troops, the country was able to thwart an attempted coup led by Abdullah Luthufi who was backed by foreign mercenaries. The then leader, President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and his government were restored to power and subsequently, this day of triumph was named as a national holiday.

Victory Day is not only a time to remember the brave efforts of those who defended the nation but also an opportunity for Maldivians to express their unity and patriotism. Amongst the key traditions observed on this day is a flag-hoisting ceremony in the capital, Male. Additionally, parades are usually held, and various speeches are given as well. It’s a great time for tourists to also plan a visit to the capital of the Maldives; residences and villas are on offer at private island resorts such as OZEN LIFE MAADHOO which provide access to Male where travellers can look forward to cultural discoveries.
