Digitalisation of the transport sector

Minister assures to expedite digitalisation of the transport sector regardless of challenges – Changes for the local transport system

Dr. Bandula Gunawardena, the Minister of Transport, Highways, and Mass Media, has expressed his commitment to expediting the digitalization of the transport sector in Sri Lanka. He aims to provide more convenient and efficient transport services to passengers through the implementation of digital systems, regardless of opposition. The minister highlighted that Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) tickets and railway tickets will be issued using a QR system. This move is expected to increase government revenues while streamlining ticketing processes for passengers.

Additionally, the minister mentioned plans to introduce a digital driving license system, which includes the issuance of digital licenses and the implementation of a point system for traffic violations. This initiative aims to enhance road safety and ensure accountability for drivers who violate traffic regulations.  While the digitisation of transport is in process, tourists can still rely on car rentals like Malkey Rent A Car for their tours with or without a driver for driving in Sri Lanka.
