Reviving hidden gems – Polonnaruwa’s natural wonders to gain fresh appeal
A new development initiative under the “Clean Sri Lanka” programme aims to transform the Nelumwewa hot springs in Welikanda, Polonnaruwa, into a key eco-tourism site. The project was discussed during a site meeting on June 24, followed by a field inspection, as confirmed by the President’s Media Division.
Currently underdeveloped and lacking visitor infrastructure, the hot springs have seen minimal tourist interest. Experts at the meeting underscored the site’s untapped scientific and tourism value. Proposed improvements include increasing green cover, beautifying a nearby island, and constructing a connecting bridge to enhance accessibility.
Officials from multiple government bodies, including the Mahaweli Authority and Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, were in attendance alongside environmental and tourism experts.
As the region prepares for this transformation, travellers seeking nearby accommodation can explore Hotel Sudu Araliya, a standout among Polonnaruwa hotels, offering convenient access to the area’s emerging attractions and cultural landmarks.
