New technology for convenience of Sigiriya tourists – High tech additions being considered

According to new proposals, there is a possibility that an elevator could be added to this historic structure, giving visitors a chance to easily access parts of the site. An iconic and awe-inspiring attraction, Sigiriya or “Lion Rock” dates back to the 5th century and was constructed under the patronage of King Kashyapa. Utilising the existing rock structure which is almost 200 metres in height, the king constructed an impressive citadel that stands even today. According to reports, Nandamithra Ekanayake who is the country’s Minister of Culture and Arts has stated that the proposed construction of an elevator would not damage the structure. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most visited attractions in the country and many hotels in Sigiriya have been constructed nearby such as Hotel Sigiriya providing visitors with easy access.
