Nyepi Day 2015 in Bali – Celebrating Saka New Year

Also referred to as Saka New Year, Nyepi Day is celebrated in the Indonesian island of Bali each year. The date of this annual event is decided according to the Saka calendar which is based on a lunar sequence and in 2015, the day will fall on 21st March. Tourists wishing to witness the festivities leading up to Nyepi Day can consider staying at hotels in Seminyak such as W Retreat & Spa Bali Seminyak.

A main feature of this festival is that on the day, local activities come to a standstill as island inhabitants follow a traditional ritual that is referred to as “Catur Brata Penyepian” which includes refraining from travel, activity and entertainment. Locals also follow the practice of not putting on lights for 24 hours beginning from 6 in the morning. The days before Nyepi Day however feature many fascinating traditions and festivities including local processions with small effigies and colourful banners.
