Por Tor Festival 2015

A much anticipated event on the Thai calendar is the ‘Por Tor’ festival also known as the ‘Hungry Ghost’ festival. More important to the ethnic Chinese the Por Tor festival is one considered to bring merit to the all those partaking in the days activity. Offerings such as food, candles and flowers are made to ancestors on altars with the intention feeding the ghosts of such relatives. The event takes place at every Chinese shrine on the Island. The Seng Tek Bel Shrine is considered the epitome of the festival for it hosts Por Tor festival for seven days and seven nights unlike other shrines that go no more than a few days. Por Tor is said to begin on the first day of the waxing moon of the seventh Chinese calendar month which in the Gregorian calendar would be around the end of August to early September.
