Poson Poya 2021 – a day of religious observance

This religious festival falls in June each year and is the celebration of the spread of Buddhism on the island. Buddhist devotees around the country visit the temple where they observe Sil and listen to the sermon given by the monks. Anuradhapura was the first place to receive the religion and therefore the festival takes place on a grand scale here.

Another place that is always bustling on a Poya Day would be Kandy. Sri Lanka hotels here, the likes of Hotel Topaz are situated closer to the temple. Therefore, you can simply walk out and observe how the devotees clad in white make their way to the temple for worship. The streets will also be full of dansal where food is distributed to anyone for free. Kuudu or lanterns will be lit up in every household or shop making the experience magical.
