Preparing for the Loy Krathong Festival in Thailand – Revering the Rivers

Thailand’s Loy Krathong Festival will be taking place in two months time and is one of the country’s most well-known events. Held annually each November, this event sees people floating special “krathongs” on rivers; generally made from a banana trunk, these small krathongs usually contain a candle, several coins and incense sticks. A part of this tradition is said to be a way that people give thanks to the rivers for their life-giving waters; it is also done in hopes of bringing good luck and a brighter future.

The Loy Krathong Festival can be experienced in different destinations in Thailand including Chiang Mai, Sukhothai and Bangkok. The Chao Phraya River in the Thai capital is one of the key spots for floating krathongs; those planning to witness this can do so by staying at a riverside hotel or embarking on a Chao Phraya River cruise in Bangkok offered by the likes of Manohra Cruises.
