Presidential elections are scheduled to be held in the Maldives on 9 September – Setting the stage for political change

The Maldivian archipelago is set to face the probability of change in the near future, as the country goes through its latest iteration of presidential elections. Heralding heightened political changes, the public expects certain levels of unrest and protest, as the tensions between incumbent President Solih and opposition parties continue over from the Supreme Court decision to bar former President Gayoom from contesting in the latest campaign, due to previous interference and corruption during his term.

Civilians and businesses are preparing for increased security, via increased checkpoints and roadblocks amidst rumours of terrorism. This may have a negative impact on such industries as tourism and hospitality brands like Adaaran Resorts, as the increased risk and state of unrest will discourage travel to the country and places to stay in the Maldives will be harder to find.
