The date for Ramadan moves up 11 days in the Gregorian calendar, however, remains the same on the Islamic calendar. This is because the Gregorian calendar is based on solar phenomenon while the Islamic calendar is based on the phases of the moon. The date can vary country wise as well according to sightings of the moon.
This period of 1 month, Muslims across the world take part in a session of fasting throughout the day from sunrise to sunset. During the fasting period, devotees engage in religious activities and good deeds. It is a process of cleansing one’s character and praying to God. Once the fasting period is over the faithful have a family gathering and celebrate with a major feast even at luxury hotels in Sri Lanka. Hotels everywhere, like Blue Water Club Suites, for example, have special offers for the celebration of Eid ul Fitr.
