Republic Day Celebrated in the Maldives – Remembering A Key Event in the Nation’s History

Last month, the Maldives celebrated its Republic Day which falls on 11th November each year. It commemorates the country becoming a republic from a monarchy in 1968 on this day. It’s important to note that the Maldives became a protectorate under the British Empire in 1887; subsequently, after the death of a sultan and his son, the next selected sultan turned down the opportunity to rule. This led to a referendum being held, and the nation became a republic briefly in 1953. However, the following year the monarchy was restored, and later, on 26th July 1965, the country gained its independence from the British. Another referendum was held in 1968 and the majority voted in favour of establishing a republic which was officially proclaimed on 11th November that same year.

Every year, Republic Day is celebrated with diverse events and programmes across the country including in the capital, Male. Generally, it’s customary for there to be a parade with a marching band as well as one with school children, while ceremonies are held, and speeches are given by various officials. Though it’s a public holiday, visitors to the country can still enjoy stays at the best resorts in Maldives during this time; this includes private island resorts in the Baa Atoll such as The Nautilus Maldives that also offers local island visits for cultural experiences.
