Royal Ploughing Ceremony : Highly Ceremonial Agricultural Event in Bangkok

The rice growing season in Thailand begins with the Royal Ploughing Ceremony held each year in the month of May in Bangkok. This year the ceremony will take place on the 17th of May 2023. In the local language, it is known as Wan Phra Ratcha Phithi Phuet Monkhon Lae Charot Phra Nangkhan Raek Na Khwan. The date for this day is based on astrological readings and is mainly celebrated by the Bureau of the Royal Household.

The ritual is an ancient practice that originated from Hindu and Buddhist culture to honor the farmers. The crops are also blessed in order to initiate the traditional rice growing season in the country. If you are holidaying in the city at a hotel like Pathumwan Princess Hotel, keep in mind that since this is a public holiday, some Bangkok tourist attractions may be closed.
