The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) announced the overwhelming success of the recent Songkran festivities at Sanam Luang in Bangkok, which saw a record-breaking 784,000 participants. The Governor of TAT Thapanee Kiatphaibool revealed at a press conference that the captivating Maha Songkran World Water Festival 2024 was a tremendous hit.
From April 11 to 15, the vibrant festival on Sanam Luang and Rajdamnoen Klang Road attracted 784,883 attendees, including over 693,000 Thais and 91,595 international visitors, mainly from Europe. This surge in participation brought significant economic benefits, with direct spending estimated at 950 million baht. This spending is expected to generate 1.935 billion baht in economic circulation, resulting in a total boost of 2.886 billion baht for the economy and 742 million baht in VAT collections.
The festivities provided rewarding opportunities for around 500 street vendors and their 2,000 workers. Thapanee praised the festival for attracting both local and international tourists and receiving excellent feedback in visitor surveys.
Social media buzz further highlighted Sanam Luang as a must-visit destination. The proximity to festive hotspots like Khao San Road and Phra Arthit Road added to the excitement. The Songkran Thai New Year celebrations also gained international recognition, with 35 foreign embassies collaborating with the Thai government to promote the festival, following its UNESCO recognition as an intangible cultural heritage last December.
Guests staying at luxury accommodation in Bangkok — offered by well-known properties such as Emporium Suites by Chatrium — can conveniently enjoy the festivities and experience the vibrant culture and excitement of Songkran.
