According to recent reports in the prominent Middle East news provider Gulf News, Saudi Arabia’s Al Shaikh family has requested that the Shaikh Mohammad Bin Abdul Wahab name be withdrawn from the country’s main Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque. A statement that was issued by the family highlighted the fact that the Qatari emir who constructed the mosque incorrectly claimed that Mohammed Bin Abdul Wahab was one of his forefathers and thus the name needs to be retracted. Declared open to the public in 2011, the mosque can hold up to 11,000 worshippers. Located within easy reach of several luxury hotels in Doha such as the popular Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara, the mosque attracts both Muslim and non-Muslim pilgrims due to its religious importance and astounding architecture. The statement reportedly included prominent signatories such as the Chairman of Shura Council and the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia amongst many others.
