Sinhala & Tamil New Year in Sri Lanka – A Hopeful New Beginning

The traditional Sinhala & Tamil New Year took place this month in Sri Lanka; it was a time to mark new beginnings which had even more meaning this year as the country looks to recover following the COVID-19 pandemic. Observed by both Sinhala Buddhists and Tamil Hindus, this cultural festival fell on 13th and 14th April 2021.

Both the end of the old year and the beginning of the new year are celebrated during this festival, while auspicious times given by astrologers for certain activities are followed as well. Amongst the key traditions observed are the boiling of milk in a new clay pot, greeting elders, preparing sweetmeats and sharing family meals. Such rituals and customs took place at homes across the island; those who stayed at Galle hotels including properties such as The Fortress Resort & Spa were able to partake in the traditional food of this festival as well.
