Sir Bani Yas Island Host Archaeologists – Unearthing A Rich History

Sir Bani Yas Island in Abu Dhabi is currently playing host to a group of archaeologists in a project that is focusing on unearthing sites that have historical and cultural value. The team who arrived on 13th October will be here till 28th October and are working on the island’s northern coast, excavating an ancient house that can be found in the abandoned area known as Al Zahir Village. The island has other sites of historical importance such as a Christian monastery that dates back to the 7th Century, which can be visited while staying at a Sir Bani Yas hotel such as Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara. Apart from the monastery, other archaeological highlights that have been found here over the years include a dry stone walled mosque and ancient cemeteries. Put together by the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority’s, Historic Environment Department, the present team of archaeologists is being led by Dr Mark Beech.
