Sri Lanka Beats Guinness Record for Largest Tea Party in Kandy – A Record Breaking Cuppa

In an event that saw the current Guinness Record being broken, the hill capital of Kandy in Sri Lanka recently hosted the world’s largest tea party. Held on the last weekend in August, this unique tea party was organised as part of a joint collaboration between the Sri Lanka Tea Board, SriLankan Airlines and Sri Lanka Tourism, while Asia Pacific Onboard Tour (APOT) agencies was the implementing partner. Sri Lanka is famed for its tea the world over and an ideal way to visit and explore these tea plantations would be to stay at bungalows in Kandythat offer easy access to the hill country. Mountbatten Bungalow belonging to Theme Resorts & Spas is one such option worth considering. The previous record for largest tea party in the world stood at 32,681 cups of tea, set in India’s, Nehru Stadium. This momentous event in Sri Lanka saw a total of 35,000 cups of tea being served with President Maithripala Sirisena and the country’s Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe consuming the 32,682nd and 32,683rd cups which marked the breaking of the record.
