Sri Lanka Faces Various Impacts from Ukraine War

Planning the Way Ahead

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February this year, Sri Lanka faced various impacts including on its economy; this was highlighted on the online edition of the Sunday Times newspaper on 27th February 2022. Amongst the factors mentioned was that tourism would be hit since Russia and Ukraine contribute significantly to arrival numbers; additionally, the country would face challenges in terms of rising global fuel prices because of the war, while Russia is a key tea export market for the island.

However, there is cause for Sri Lanka to be optimistic as well. In March this year, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Emirates and the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau that is set to help bolster trade and tourism on the island. Additionally, the country is planning on launching a global tourism promotional campaign later this year too. Tourists continue to arrive drawn by the prospect of quarantine-free entry for those fully vaccinated who can choose to stay at hotels in Ahungalla; such options include the “Safe & Secure” certified Heritance Ahungalla that offers guests a chance to enjoy Sri Lanka’s famous south coast once more.
