Sri Lanka looks to adventure travel – the island aims to attract ‘quality’ tourists and help rebuild economy 

Sri Lanka is utilizing adventure tourism as a key component in its economic recovery following a tumultuous period. The country’s tourism sector faced significant challenges due to the Covid-19 pandemic, resulting in a foreign currency crisis, food and fuel shortages, inflation, and power outages. However, during a conference in Dubai, prominent Sri Lankan figures expressed optimism about tourism’s potential to aid the nation’s revival.

To diversify its offerings and attract visitors seeking adventure holidays, Sri Lanka aims to position itself as an affordable luxury destination. As part of this strategy, they have recently introduced the Pekoe Trail, a 23-day mountain hike, among other adventure options. Hunas Falls Hotel Kandy and many a hotel in Kandy Sri Lanka also offer adventure experiences like hiking and birdwatching to encourage tourists seeking to explore. Harin Fernando, the Sri Lankan Minister of Tourism and Lands, emphasized the country’s commitment to making Sri Lanka a preferred destination for affordable luxury and adventure experiences.
