A renewed push to strengthen travel confidence and reconnect global visitors with Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is accelerating plans to introduce free electronic travel authorisations for visitors from 40 countries as the nation responds to a recent slowdown in tourism linked to Middle East tensions and disruptions in global air travel.
Foreign Affairs and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath stated that the proposal is expected to move swiftly through Cabinet and parliamentary approval processes in the coming weeks. The decision follows a noticeable decline in visitor arrivals caused by flight interruptions, rising travel expenses, and reduced regional connectivity.
Despite the short-term dip, Sri Lanka’s tourism sector continues to show resilience, surpassing 700,000 arrivals during the first quarter of the year. Key markets such as India, the United Kingdom, China, and Germany remain strong contributors to visitor numbers.
Industry stakeholders, including hospitality brands such as Cinnamon Citadel Kandy, are expected to welcome the move as travellers once again seek memorable experiences like Sunrise at Adam’s Peak.
