Sri Lanka announced a welcome change for tourists this year, reverting to its previous visa fee structure. In April 2024, a $75 visa fee was introduced for non-SAARC nation citizens, raising concerns within the tourism industry. Recognising this potential deterrent, the Sri Lankan government listened to feedback and reinstated the earlier $50 visa fee. This decision is a positive step for the local tourism sector, which is crucial for the country’s economic growth and a cost-effective visa fee ensures Sri Lanka remains competitive as a travel destination as well.
Furthermore, the island nation streamlined the visa application process with the introduction of the new eVisa system (https://www.srilankaevisa.lk/). Replacing the previous Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), this system enhances convenience and efficiency for travellers by simplifying the process and making it quicker and easier to obtain entry documentation.
With such measures in place, the country will be hoping for an increase in arrivals and bookings at hotels in Sri Lanka. With key hospitality brands like Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts offering properties across the island, travellers have a chance to easily experience the best of this destination once they arrive. Looking ahead, these developments are positive indicators for the tourism industry. As of 27th July 2024, the nation has already welcomed 1.138 million tourists, well on track to achieving its 2.5 million target by the year’s end.
