Sri Lanka Suspends its Airport Reopening

A Cautious Approach to Reopening

The reopening of Sri Lanka’s International Airport was delayed indefinitely as a result of health and safety concerns emanating from the COVID-19 Pandemic. The country itself has been preparing for a reopening in the past couple of weeks. With the number of domestic cases seemingly under control, the Bandaranaike International Airport was set to reopen for international flights on August 1st.

Some of the best resorts in Sri Lanka – say, for example, the chains like Browns Hotel & Resorts – were preparing as well to welcome back international guests. However, once the country’s repatriation efforts led to a spike in the number of COVID-19 cases, the authorities have stated that they need to reassess the situation before going ahead with the planned reopening.
