Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) Director General Nalin Perera predicts significant revenue growth in 2024, exceeding Rs. 7 billion. Embarkation fees and the Tourism Development Levy are expected to contribute Rs. 5.18 billion and Rs. 2.087 billion respectively. Revenue distribution will prioritize tourism promotion (70% to Sri Lanka Tourism Promotions Bureau), followed by industry development (14% to SLTDA) and education (12% to Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism & Hotel Management).
Mr. Perera highlighted the tourism industry’s rapid growth, poised to surpass foreign remittances as the top foreign exchange earner. This success is attributed to a strong start in 2024, surpassing 100,000 arrivals by February 13th and reaching a total of 306,708 so far. The industry remains confident of achieving or exceeding the 2.3 million tourist target for 2024 through collaborative efforts. Daily arrival rates have significantly increased from an average of 3,000 in 2023 to the current 7,000, with a healthy trend expected to continue through March. Additionally, Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau Chairman Chalaka Gajabahu emphasized the growth in the European market, noting extended tourist stays as a positive trend. Popular parts of the country tend to be the central highlands, where the best hotels in Sri Lanka the likes of Earl’s Regency experience a busy flow of guests.
