Sri Lanka Tourism Ends 2021 with Record Numbers – Hoping for More Arrivals in 2022

Continuing its steady progress to get the tourism industry back on track, Sri Lanka recorded a total of 89,506 tourists in December last year; this was the highest number in 20 months since the pandemic in the island from March 2020. The country which began offering quarantine-free holidays for fully vaccinated travellers saw an increase in visitors in the latter part of 2021 and ended the year recording 194,495 arrivals.

Those from India made up the island’s largest source market last year followed by Russia, the UK and Germany respectively. It will be hoped that 2022 will see the trend of increasing arrivals continue with travellers getting the chance to explore Sri Lanka once more and enjoy unique accommodation options too; these include stays at some of the best hotels in Nuwara Eliya such as the “Safe & Secure” certified Heritance Tea Factory housed in a converted 19th-century tea factory.
