Sri Lanka recently claimed the title of ‘Most Popular Tourism Destination Award’ for the second year in a row, at the Guangzhou International Travel Fair (GITF). The Sri Lankan Foreign Affairs Ministry stated that the award was a testament to the island’s popularity among Chinese travellers. China is Sri Lanka’s second largest tourism market and arrival numbers have been steadily climbing. Chinese travellers are drawn to the tropical weather, green landscapes and boutique hotels in Sri Lanka, such as the eco-friendly Kalundewa Retreat in Dambulla, for example. The Guangzhou International Travel Fair is the leading travel Expo in South China. The travel fair attracts affluent travels yearly, and the number of visitors has continued to grow. This large crowd has provided Sri Lankan Tourism promoters a greater reach among travellers for its unique branding as a tropical destination.
