Sri Lanka’s tourism sector is showing promising signs of recovery as it surpasses half a million tourist arrivals in 2024, with 537,887 tourists having visited the country so far, including 111,284 arrivals recorded this month alone. This increase reflects the gradual recovery of the tourism industry following recent challenges. The government and tourism authorities are actively promoting Sri Lanka as a safe and welcoming destination, implementing measures to enhance visitor experiences and ensure safety protocols.
The milestone underscores the resilience of Sri Lanka’s tourism industry and its potential for further growth. Chairman of Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd., Athula Galkatiya, attributes the rise in tourist arrivals to President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s economic initiatives and the peaceful environment within the country. This increase in arrivals has led to notable growth in air passenger usage at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Katunayake, indicating positive momentum for Sri Lanka’s tourism sector, and potentially affecting major businesses in hotspots and in several examples of Colombo city hotel, such as the unique Cinnamon Red Colombo.
