From script to screen, Sri Lanka stars again.
Oscar-nominated filmmaker Deepa Mehta kicked off the first-ever Signature Weekend by Cinnamon Hotels & Resorts, held on May 31 and June 1, celebrating Sri Lanka’s growing role in international cinema. The event featured exclusive screenings of Midnight’s Children, Water, and Funny Boy, all filmed in Sri Lanka, highlighting its cinematic versatility.
Mehta, whose relationship with Sri Lanka spans two decades, praised the local crews and landscapes for their talent and adaptability. During the weekend, she announced her next film Sher, set to be filmed in Nuwara Eliya and Kandy.
As filming progresses, visitors can explore the region’s charm with stays at Kandy Myst by Cinnamon, one of the leading 4-star hotels in Kandy, Sri Lanka, offering comfort near iconic locations.
With support from Sri Lanka’s film and tourism boards, the country is positioning itself as a global filmmaking destination. Signature Weekends aims to spotlight this potential through art, film, and culture.
