Sri Lanka’s tourism industry marked a historic milestone in May 2026, recording its highest-ever arrival numbers for the month. According to data from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), the island welcomed 145,745 international visitors: a 9.6% year-on-year increase from May 2025’s 132,919 arrivals. India led as the top source market with 60,342 visitors, followed by the United Kingdom, China, Germany, and Australia. Foreign Affairs Minister Vijitha Herath highlighted the achievement as a key milestone driven by stability and sound policy. This sustained surge in arrivals has invigorated coastal hubs along the southern belt. Established beachfront resorts such as Hikka Tranz by Cinnamon are seeing steady mid-year occupancy as travellers explore the coast, while local Hikkaduwa seafood restaurants continue to benefit from the growing influx of international diners seeking authentic coastal culinary experiences.
